A message from Mike:
Hey everyone!
As a regular speaker on the festival circuit, I come across a lot of the same questions regarding distribution of low-budget films. So on Saturday, October 24th, I’ll be holding a private workshop in the Dayton area to share with you the MUST KNOWS of distribution in a digital age.
The biggest mistake a filmmaker can make is to begin shooting their film without having a clear distribution strategy. If you’ve already shot your film and are seeking distribution, it’s even more reason to attend as I’m guaranteeing that I will personally watch any movies that are brought to me at the event. (And I'm always looking for new material including shorts, features, and docs at all stages of production.)
The information I’ll be sharing will not only help you raise money for your projects by showing your investors some hard numbers, but also increase the chance that you will actually get a paycheck from all of your hard work. The distribution business is constantly evolving, and it pays to be aware of the latest trends and market growths. It also makes it easier for me to put your film in the profit zone if you’re aware of the lesser known facts.
Although the discussion will largely be driven by your questions, below are some topics that I plan on covering: <!- The power of the niche
Distribution Contracts: standard terms, unit pricing, territory buyouts, exclusive vs. non exclusive, percentages, payment schedules, etc.
Case studies of actual low budget films; what made some films succeed and others fail
The fastest growing markets and genres in film distribution
What it takes to get into Blockbuster, Netflix, and Hollywood video
Television network distribution
When to self-distribute, when to stay away from it
The pitfalls and advantages of internet distribution
When to utilize the festival circuit
How to pitch a distributor
I’ve also asked writer/director David Donnelly to attend. Donnelly just wrapped his feature Doctor Feelgood in Miami, Florida and I’m working with him on his next project. It’s a great chance to get some tips on where to allocate your funds to maximize your dollar. He’ll also be bringing some clips from the movie so you’ll get a chance to see some of the film before it hits the festival circuit next spring.
I'm leaving some time at the end of the workshop to get a chance to talk to each of you one on one as much possible. Miike's Career Highlights- Katchman's career as a studio exec includes Orion, MGM, Lionsgate, and First Look Studios. He was responsible for distribution of such classics as Silence of the Lambs and Dances with Wolves. After leaving the studio world to build his own independent distribution company, he has had great successes with getting small films in Blockbuster, Netflix, Hollywood Video, Best Buy, as well as various cable networks. When: Saturday, October 24th 1-4 p.m.
